The evening includes:
- Social Hour - Begins with a social hour at 5:00pm at the Custer Coliseum on the east end of the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds
- Dinner and Beverages - A catered meal is part of the ticketed event.
- Entertainment, Silent Auction, and Dessert Auction
- The public portion of the Fairest competition
- Candidates participate in several components, including:
- A prepared 30-second self-introduction
- A prepared 30-second radio advertisement promoting the Northern Wisconsin State Fair
- Impromptu questions in front of the audience
- A faux Facebook/social-media exercise as part of the competition
- Candidate interviews/evaluation that begin before the public Gala
- Judging and Deliberation - A panel of judges evaluates the candidates, with the new Fairest and Attendant announced at the conclusion of the evening.
- Recognition/crowning of the new representatives - The successful candidates become the NWSF's ambassadors for the following year.
But there's an important second purpose:
The NWSF Fairest of the Fair Gala also serves as the primary fundraiser for the Fairest program. NWSF sponsorship materials have included event sponsorships, table sponsorships, auction sponsorships, food/dessert sponsorships, and individual tickets. Proceeds help support operations, including the Fairest representatives' travel, promotional materials, the crown and sash, and participation in the Wisconsin Association of Fairs' State Fairest competition.
